About Us

The Durham Branch is part of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Our branch started in 1982 and currently has hundreds of members. Durham Region covers eight current municipalities: Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, and Uxbridge.

Map of the Durham Region Municipalities

Historically, the modern Regional Municipality of Durham covers two dissolved counties;

  • Durham (and it’s townships; Cartwright, Cavan, Clarke, Darlington, Hope and Manvers)
  • Ontario (Brock, Mara, Pickering, Rama, Reach, Scott, Thorah, Uxbridge, Whitby and East Whitby).

Our branch goal is to encourage, bring together and assist those interested in the pursuit of genealogy and family history in the Durham Region. Our members focus on preserving information that will be useful for anyone doing research on ancestors from the Durham Region. We also provide a sound base for researchers living here who have ancestors in other areas around the world.

Our members have an interest in genealogy and enjoy connecting with other like-minded people. Our executive is made of up volunteers, as are all the teams working on various branch projects. We are not professional genealogists for hire.

The O.G.S. is a registered charity and issues Canadian income tax receipts for all donations, including those received by Branches. We also welcome donations of family histories, books, maps and other genealogically significant items.

Joining the Durham Branch of the O.G.S. is a great way to expand the scope of your genealogical research, as well as to meet people with similar interests.
